In some cases, the stress stimulus becomes so overwhelming that the HPA axis starts to shut down and becomes so underactive cortisol levels drop. The body's energy reserves literally slow to a crawl, much like a how a city heat wave causes a brown out. When this happens, you are likely to notice fatigue and depression symptoms. Also, too little cortisol can also cause an overactive immune system, which can lead to autoimmune problems.
